What Are Raspberry Ketones? Raspberry ketone is an aromatic compound that is found in the red raspberry plant (Rubus idaeus L.). The plant is native to northern Asia and Europe, and has been used for many centuries for medicinal and nutritional purposes.

Raspberry ketones stimulate brown adipose tissue (BAT) induced increase in energy expenditure in the human body. The primary function of BAT is to generate body heat. By increasing the body’s ability of burning off excess calories (by raising the body’s energy expenditure), it helps in shedding off excess body fat.

Raspberry ketones increase the metabolism of lipids by increasing norepinephrine-induced lipolysis via beta-adrenergic receptor. The rate limiting step in lipolysis in fat cells, is the hydrolysis of triacylglycerol, which is catalysed by heat sensitive lipase (HSL). The translocation of HSL from the cytosol to the lipid droplets that are located in the fat cells is increased by raspberry ketones, weight loss then occurs as a result of lipolysis.

They suppress pancreatic lipase activity and as a result it inhibits the absorption of fat in the small intestines.

Tests have been done by researchers on in-vitro fat cells using raspberry ketones. They observed that the fat cells tested with raspberry ketone had a higher rate of breakdown than the fat cells that were set as controls.

The researchers suggested that the raspberry ketone causes an increase in the secretion of adiponectin hormone, which is involved in lipid and glucose metabolism and in the control of body weight. In addition to boosting the burning of fat, the adiponectin hormone lowers blood sugar, enhances insulin sensitivity, and reduces triglyceride levels.

One of the mechanism by which accumulation of excess abdominal fat causes cardiovascular and metabolic diseases is through causing a reduction in adiponectin levels. The low levels of adiponectin hormone contribute to the development of, type 2 diabetes, insulin resistance, and cardiovascular diseases in overweight or obese individuals.

Raspberry ketones also inhibit the activity of alpha amylase, a dietary enzyme that is involved in the breakdown of starch and absorption of sugar, as a result it helps in reducing body fat. Dietary sugars such as fructose and glucose are known to cause an increase hepatic lipogenesis and promote the accumulation of fat.
